A slipcase is a five-sided box, into which books, or book sets, are slipped for protection, leaving the spine exposed. Special editions of books are often housed in a slipcase for a stylish appearance when placed on a bookshelf. Traditionally, the exposed spine was placed to face the back wall of the bookshelf to protect it from light, and the exposed wall of the slipcase was highly decorated.
