Weekly News

We have three events coming up soon for you;
Tuesday 13th July, 1.00- 3.00pm  Artist Books Group, BVAC Tarragindi
Sunday 18th July  9.00am to 12.00 noon,  Open Day at BVAC with sales, Library and more
Friday 30th July   9:30am – 12:30pm  First Bindery Opening Day.
Please note that Bindery opening days are a chance to take some work in to do in the Bindery, taking advantage of the equipment, which you can use or have assistance in using. Please bring your work, any paste or glues which you need, and your materials. We will not be selling materials and other supplies at Bindery Days. Bindery Days are something new for us. They will be offered on an occasional basis for half days on weekdays, and an experienced committee member or other member will be present to unlock and assist, within their own knowledge and experience.
Forthcoming courses are as follows:
Introduction Course.  Weekend of 14 & 15 August. Cost $180
Intermediate Course. Weekend of 28 & 29 August. Cost $140
Please check the website for details and to register (https://qbg.org.au/courses-and-workshops/)  . Please note that we are fixing new dates for Robin Tait’s 18th C Double cord full leather binding course. Could anyone who was interested in the course, and hasn’t already expressed that interest, contact myself or Guild President Marilyn George so we can gauge numbers and suitable dates?
Here is the link to the ABC (Association of Book Crafts) Newsletter from New Zealand.  https://www.dropbox.com/s/on9gdb54ipt2406/21-07%20ABC%20Newsletter%20low%20res.pdf?dl=0  In yet another excellent edition they feature articles on the split-spine binding (from the recent Designer Bookbinders Newsletter) but taking us further into unusual, modern binding styles with the Pixel Binding by Ben Elbel, known for his innovative construction methods. This one is quite beautiful and very flexible. Ben Elbel gives wonderful details on the decoration, and two casing-in methods but you may have to pay for one of his classes to find out exactly how it is done. There are also interesting articles on how to make a book safe (if you can bear to destroy a book) and how to make your own sewing frame.
An interesting article on very traditional cover decoration was sent by Jason Cooper. There is a link here (https://www.instagram.com/p/CQwUf4FMHcu/?utm_medium=copy_link ), and an attachment (link here  https://www.dropbox.com/s/0a6vozmpbrgsia2/Turbayne-.-Wrightson-article-New.pdf?dl=0 ). The work of A A Turbayne was unknown to me but his Arts and Crafts-era book designs, and the work of the binder, Lucy Gilchrist Wrightson are breathtaking in their style, details and execution.
Michelle Vandermeer is also running courses during the year in non-traditional binding styles. I attach the flyer which Michelle puts out for her classes. Please contact her for more details and to make bookings.
Finally, I have a request from a member to purchase a small bookbinding press, or one suitable for embossing images from metal plates onto high quality paper. If you think you might be able to help please email me and I will put you in touch.
Until I see you at a meeting or event, happy bookbinding.
